Did you know that one Latina dies of breast cancer every 90 minutes? The statistics are alarming. For this reason, Orgullosa has teamed up with Liga Contra el Cancer, a center dedicated to providing free cancer services for underserved patients to spark the conversation (#OrgullosaStrong) with Latinas about the importance of supporting one another in the early detection of breast cancer.
For the month of October, Orgullosa would like to rally the Latina community to show that Together We Are Stronger by giving the gift of early detection to those in need by liking the Orgullosa Facebook page as that triggers an automatic $1 donation, for every like received, to Liga Contra el Cancer.
In Early October; Orgullosa, celebrity host, Adamari Lopez and oncologist from Liga Contra el Cancer, Dr. De La Rosa hosted an important LIVE "Together We Are Stronger" Facebook Chat where I learned the importance of early detection. Because Hispanic women are at such a high risk for breast cancer, it's important that we become more proactive in taking care of ourselves and getting regular breast exams. I also learned that if you're 20 to 39 years old you should get a breast exam at least every 3 years and if you're 40 years old or older, a clinical breast exam should be done every year, plus periodical breast self-exams in the shower or in front of a mirror.
A close female family member of mine was recently diagnosed with cancer. Through her diagnosis I realized how important early detection is and how we as women need to listen to our bodies when we know that something isn't right. Early detection of cancer can be a huge key factor on beating the disease.
Encourage your loved ones to get a breast cancer exam, because early detection is the key to remaining together. To learn more, visit the Orgullosa Facebook page at www.facebook.com/orgullosa or www.Orgullosa.com
