We recently celebrated the debut of our new Disney princess, Elena of Avalor. She is the first and only Latina princess and my little Latina princess and I were ready to welcome her with open arms. Set in the enchanted fairytale land of Avalor, the series tells the story of Elena, a brave and adventurous teenager who has saved her kingdom from an evil sorceress and must now learn to rule as crown princess until she is old enough to be queen.
Elena’s journey will lead her to understand that her new role requires thoughtfulness, resilience and compassion, the traits of all truly great leaders.
"What qualities must someone have an order to be a great leader?" A question I had recently asked my young daughter. Her knowledge and ideas never cease to impress me and at the same time I shouldn't be surprised by her responses, over the years I've become fully aware of how bright she is. My goal has and always will be to raise great thinkers, people who take the time to think things through. Her first response to my question was the word "fearless". She stated “Everyone has fears, but if you fear something too much, it'll prevent you from accomplishing your goals”. She’s right, many of us allow fear to hold us back from achieving our goals.
Kindness, Wisdom and Friendship were other traits she believes you need in order to be a great and fair leader. Kindness will help you earn the respect of others and will win over the hearts of your people. Wisdom will help you make knowledgeable decisions in order to resolve the challenges you will face as a leader. And friendship, you're going to need friends in times of need.
