Give your pets the best with the perfect diet and this easy to make DIY pet collar bandana. These were so simple to create and so adorable that I had to make several in different prints all in one night.
Karl joined our little family just before Christmas and we’ve been in love with him since. He easily fit right into our home. I knew adopting a rescue was not going to be easy and I was a little nervous about the idea but I was determined to give him a happy, healthy and safe home. The kids were so excited to welcome him that I knew it would all be worth it. Unexpectedly, He fit so perfectly into our environment that it was no big task at all providing for him. His fashion attire is just as important as his diet. He needs to feel good inside and out. Purina is a brand my parents trusted with our dogs when I was a child so naturally it was my first and only option to give him.

And since Karl can't enjoy tacos like the rest of us, I decided to add a little spice and flavor to his wardrobe with simple DIY collar bandana. You can slip the bandana onto your pets collar or make your own matching collar.
I'm not great at sewing but this was pretty simple. If you don't have a sewing machine, you can make these using hem tape.
What you need:
- Fabric - 1/2 yard
- Ruler
- Buckle Clips or dog collar if you don't want to make your own collar.
- Scissors
- Hem Tape
- Sewing machine (optional)
- Iron (optional)
First measure around your dogs neck and decide how wide you want your bandana to be.
For example: Karl's neck measured 10.5 inches. So I wanted his bandana to be 8.5 inches across.
Take a piece of paper and fold it in half. Measure your inches across and give yourself 1 inch on each side for your collar opening. You'll have to determine how long you'll want your bandana to be.
- Once you've cut out your template and unfold it, you'll have a hexagon shape.
- Use the template to map out where you'll be cutting your fabric. You can also fold the fabric and template in half and line up the folded edges to map and cut out your fabric.
- Tip: If your print only goes in one direction it's best to fold your template in half and map out your template side by side so you have the print going in the correct direction on both sides. You will have to attaches both triangles together to create your hexagon shape.
- With the inside of your fabric facing up, fold in the sides about 1/2 inch. Use hem tape or sew it together. I did use hemp tape because it gave me a sturdier opening to slip the collar through.
- Sew your fabric inside out from the tip until the opening of the sides (where the fabric is folded in) You can also use hem tape to attach your fabric together. Your hem tape will have to be placed on the print side of the fabric.
- Once you your fabric is attached on the edges, pull the the fabric through one of the openings on either side.
Slip onto your dogs collar!
Now, if you'd like to make your own collar. Here's how.
Add 2 inches to the circumference of your pets neck, this will give you enough length to attach your clips to each end.
- You'll cut your fabric 2 inches longer than your pets neck and 3 inches wide.
(If your fabric isn't perfectly cut evenly, that's ok!)
- Fold your strip in half as best as you can to determine a center. Draw a line across that center.
- Place hem tape down the center of the strip.
- Fold each side of the fabric to line up with the center as closely as you can, this will help create smooth and straight edges.
- Use your iron to seal closed.
- Fold your fabric in half and use hem tape to secure close.
- Slip your clips on at the sides and fold over. Secure clips onto fabric by sewing or using a glue gun (hem tape make not me strong enough)
