Like many other kids, mine had been begging for a dog for years. They have no idea how much work goes into caring, training and providing for a puppy, I did. The timing for a puppy was never a convenient time. It wasn’t until I saw a photo of Karl on my facebook page that I knew the time was now and he’d be perfect for us. A friend of mine runs a local non-profit organization that rescues’ dogs from the shelter that are about to be put under. The organization locates foster parents until the dogs find their forever home. One day in December she posted a few photos of dogs that needed immediate fosters, and that’s when I saw Karl. He was injured, his leg had been bitten by a bigger dog and was bandaged up. I immediately sent her a messaged letting her know that I would foster Karl until he was adopted. A few days later I was at the local animal shelter picking him up, I kept my secret from my kids until the day before we were headed to the animal shelter. They were so excited and couldn’t wait to meet him.
It was just a few days before Christmas when he came home with us, and it only took a few hours to know that he was part of our family and that we were his forever family. And so our journey of having a dog in the family began. It’s been months now that he’s been with us and the kids are still excited to have him around.
The shelter had no information about his past, they didn’t know if he had a home, what tendencies he had, how old he was. The veterinarian did estimate that he was about a year old, and my main concern was his diet. I had so many concerns and questions - Did he need a special diet? What had he been eating for the past year? How often? I would have to figure all of this out soon.
